The diversity of origins, languages, customs, values, and beliefs that has made for a considerable increase in sociocultural diversity in Barcelona over the past years has brought on complex changes in coexistence and social cohesion, as well as new opportunities to be addressed. Depending on how we interpret and approach this new situation, we will make certain factors prevail over others. Pla Barcelona Interculturalitat (Barcelona Plan for Interculturalism), promoted by the Barcelona City Council in 2009, strives to define these changes and provide responses to the city’s upcoming challenges and needs.
Bearing in mind the specific character of this city and based on a proactive approach and an open debate including a broad range of social agents, and working towards the greatest possible consensus, we have to define a series of principles and lines of work aimed at the Plan’s underlying goal: to shape the city we imagine for ourselves over the next ten to fifteen years.
The Pla Barcelona Interculturalitat website is intented to provide a platform for knowledge and participation for all those wishing to become involved in this process. The site provides information on the Plan’s progress, related events, documents generated on the subject, contributions from participating agents, and an opportunity to make your own contribution by answering the Plan’s “Five Questions”, among other things.
The Plan is a work in progress. We encourage you to become actively involved; to shape the city we want for ourselves, it is more important than ever to hear from each and every one of you. Over the next few months, this will be the place where we will listen to your voices and bring them all together.
