Pla Barcelona Interculturalitat stemmed from the immigration policies created by the city starting in the late 1990s to promote efforts and activities supporting intercultural management. From the first Pla Municipal per a la Interculturalitat (Municipal Plan for Interculturalism) in 1997 to the most recent Pla de Treball per a la Immigració (Immigration Agenda) in 2008-2011, and including a variety of efforts in the city’s districts and the Programa Barcelona Diàleg Intercultural (Barcelona Intercultural Dialogue Program) in 2008, among others, the focus has been on developing an awareness of the complexities involved in this new situation and of the opportunities it offers for the city’s enrichment. Now, with the development of the ambitious Pla Barcelona Interculturalitat, these intercultural policies will have a decisive influence.
